Members and supporters of Amnesty International-Philippines (AIP) wearing colourful masks and green shirts marched their way to the Quezon City Memorial Circle (QCMC) to the beat of the drums on Sunday morning to kick-off its week-long celebration of the 16th International day of the World’s Indigenous People.

“Today, we celebrate with the Indigenous Peoples around the world.  We wear masks to symbolize that amidst diversity of peoples of the world, we all have the same human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards,” opened Dr. Aurora Parong, Section Director of Amnesty International Philippines, after the march to the Runnex Area of QCMC.

Dr. Parong, in behalf of Amnesty International calls on the Aquino administration to look into the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a world agreement with comprehensive and specific development goals to bring down extreme poverty and ensure equal development adopted by world leaders in 2000. The following goals are set to be achieved by 2015.

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education

Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women

Goal 4: Reduce child mortality

Goal 5: Improve maternal health

Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability

Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Dr. Parong added that the current administration must ensure that programs are being implemented to achieve the said goals, specifically goals number two and five: Achieve universal primary education and Improve maternal health. She explained that indigenous peoples living in rural areas and mountain villages should have complete access to social services benefited by other Filipinos.

AIP aims to amplify the voices of the indigenous people in the country who are among the disadvantaged groups often subjected to discrimination. They will also be going to other rural areas this week to ensure awareness of rights of other indigenous peoples in the country.
